The Bayonet Pattern 1907, although
originally
introduced in 1907, (and subsequently modified by the
removal of the curved quillon), was used throughout World War
I. Many of these bayonets were later refurbished for use in
World War 2 , and production of new bayonets was continued
throughout this time. |
|
First pattern bayonets with the swept
quillon are now scarce, these being the subject of
modification in 1913 so that the swept forward part of the quillon was
removed. Bayonets produced after this time were made without
the swept forward quillon. |

The Bayonet 1907 comprises a single edged, fullered
blade of approximately 43cm in length. The grips are of wood
secured by two bolts, metal parts of the hilt are normally
blued. The blade could have been finished in a variety of
ways. Originally bright finished they can be found also with
blued, sandblasted or parkerised, ( a chemical treatment
used to dull the metal usually shown as a matt silvery gray
finish
with this bayonet ), blades.

The
majority of
Pattern 1907 bayonets will have the pattern date (1907)
stamped on the ricasso, together with the crown of the monarch
at that time. The month & year of manufacture should be
stamped immediately below this together with the manufacturers
name or initials. The illustration below shows where to look
for this. |

Also shown above is
the oil hole through the pommel. This was an official

and those that were later refurbished. |
|
Scabbards for the 1907 bayonet are leather with steel mounts.
There are variations on scabbard design and it is therefore
possible to find scabbards with either oval or round shaped
frog studs, these being of Australian manufacture possibly,
and the scabbard mounts can also be found with either curved
or straight edges. |
