Scabbards Pattern 1888 & 1903

There are a number of different scabbards approved for use with the P1888 Bayonet. the most common (shown below ) comprises a black (or brown ) leather body with a pronounced seam on one side. A steel chape and steel topmount were attached to the leather body and secured by staples. The frog stud is oval.

There is a variant of the above scabbard issued to the Navy, and this differs from the above in having a chequered frog stud, and, also has a different tip.
The P1888 Scabbard Mk2 had no frog stud. Instead a leather band was secured to the topmount for attachment to the belt. The example we show below is missing part of this leather band but as can be seen the scabbards differ considerably with those of the Scabbard Mk1. This pattern scabbard was issued only in extremely limited quantities.

As well as the scabbards detailed above, the P1888 bayonet was also issued with the P1903 scabbard. This comprised a leather body, with an internal steel chape, the tip of which protrudes, together with a steel topmount. There is no frog stud, however a leather frog (not shown ) was used with this scabbard. Scabbard bodies may be of black or brown leather.
