The Bayonet Pattern 1903

  • The Pattern 1903 Bayonet retains the blade of the P1888 bayonet, this being doubled edged and 12.00 inches in length. The bayonet is a modification of the P1888 retaining not only the blade, but the crossguard also, however new pommels and grips secured by two bolts are fitted.
Bayonets of the Pattern 1903 can be either new production or modifications of existing stocks of the P1888. Since dates of production are stamped on to the blades it is easy case to identify that modified old stock byonets will have dates prior to 1903, those of new manufacture dates from 1903 on. All blades will bear the pattern mark of 1903 below the crown and royal cypher stamping. (Note:the actual date of manufacture, month and year, are shown below this ). Despite being superceded by the Bayonet Pattern 1907, this bayonet continued in service up to and during World War 2.

The P1903 Bayonet was issued predominantly with the Scabbard P1888 Mk1 detailed previously, however Scabbards P1903 were manufactured also and this scabbard was issued both with the P1903 Bayonet as well as the P1888 bayonet. This scabbard was detailed on the previous page.
